Qualcomm took the bull by the horns to curb the heating problems of its high-end chips. As such, the latest SoC, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, is made by TSMC rather than Samsung, and it promises to be less of a significant performance gain than real energy efficiency improvements.

The chip is set to be released in Q3 2022 to be exact.
Finally a proper temperature
The biggest concern with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is that if you want to play a lot of arms, it’s likely to heat up a bit, with problems in terms of performance or autonomy. Qualcomm clearly recognized the problem and tried to raise the bar with its 8+ Gen 1.
Began his choice of builder. The 8 Gen 1 was made by Samsung, the Plus version was left to the care of TSMC, whose 4 nm engraving process was considered more efficient and less focused on heating.
In addition, if there is a pure speed gain of 10% for the CPU and GPU, what interests us most of all are the promises in terms of energy efficiency of this chip. In detail, the improved versions of Kryo CPUs and Adreno GPUs should both provide a significant gain of 30% in this area. In general, the phone should get up to 15% overall energy efficiency.
A concrete gain in autonomy
What does this concrete mean for us? Qualcomm estimates the gain is 60 minutes of phone use in the game, suggesting better autonomy for more traditional use as well: 80 minutes of streaming, 50 minutes of social networks and no less than 17 hours of listening to music.
From what we understand, the modem, the Snapdragon X65 is also slightly improved compared to the 8 Gen 1 to offer some call wins: 25 minutes of 5G calls and straight 5 and a half hours otherwise, without specify whether it is part of Wi-Fi calling or through a traditional network. Of course, the modem is still 5G compatible up to 10 Gb / s, but it will also be able to offer up to 3.6 Gb / s on Wi-Fi 6 and 6E.
The 3 GHz milestone crossed
For fans of pure power, we still set the maximum frequency that the GPU can reach: 3.2 GHz. It’s impossible not to read MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 response, which offers a frequency in excess of 3 GHz, thus stealing the crown of the fastest chip from 8 Gen 1 and its 2.995 GHz. Let’s be clear though, these manifestations of power don’t change your daily experience in any way. Better power management, on the other hand, can be a substitute for the game.
Of the other elements that make up this SoC, we keep the same team, logical for a Plus version. So you’ll find the 7th generation Hexagon NPU, which as a reminder offers a performance gain of 20% compared to the Snapdragon 888. There’s also the Sensing Hub, this little chip that can, in theory, on the permanent offering of equipment. energy-efficient, such as face recognition, or even the same ISP, which offers up to 3.2 gigapixels per second of image processing or even 8K HDR video.
