business news EA will try to buy from Disney, Apple or Amazon
The race for buyouts is well and truly launched by the video game industry. Between Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard, Sony-Bungie and Take-Two-Zynga acquisitions, other major players are also looking to buy or buy. This is the case with Electronic Arts, which wants to strengthen immediately.
Disney, Apple or Amazon to buy EA
Electronic Arts is making the news headlines in the game today. Following the announcement of the end of the partnership between the publisher and FIFA for its flagship football simulationthe publisher returned to the spotlight once again with a new report provided by puck and supported by Kotaku. According to these two sources, the American giant will seek redemption after missing out on the opportunity to merge with NBCUniversal. In any case, it was reported by Dylan Beyers, Puck’s journalist.
In recent years, as media companies have gained more interest in the video game industry and its rapid growth, Andrew Wilson (CEO of Electronic Arts) and Electronic Arts have made several commitments. -talking to various potential buyers, including Disney, Apple and Amazon (…). Several sources with knowledge of these conversations say Electronic Arts is aggressively seeking a takeover, and is even more convinced to act on it after the agreement between Microsoft and Activision. Other sources say EA may be interested in a merger that will allow Wilson to retain his position as CEO of this new company.
Dylan Beyers goes on and explains that the most concrete deal has to do with the merger between NBCUniversal and EA. According to the journalist, Brian Roberts, current CEO of Comcast, a group of which NBCUniversal is a subsidiary, wants a partnership between the two companies to create a new entity, with Andrew Wilson in his head. But in the end, the negotiations were unsuccessful.
Redemption rather than redemption?
EA, like most of its competitors, has decided in recent years to continue sustainable growth by acquiring several studios for nearly $ 5 billion. A desire was once again confirmed by Andrew Wilson during a meeting between shareholders in February. However, big acquisitions like Microsoft’s Activision-Blizzard, Sony’s Bungie and Zynga’s Take-Two are now leading to a form of imbalance between different players, who seek to gain influence immediately, such as Puck and Kotaku. This haste was expressed in particular by the actions of Andrew Wilson, who sought to acquire EA at Disney in March.
This information is even more meaningful when you know that the licensing agreement between the publisher and the giant is about to expire. Agreement primarily related to Star Wars games. As Kotaku explained, EA will license the Fallen Order sequel until 2023 before passing the baton to studios like Quantic Dream and Ubisoft, whose licensed titles have already been announced.
For their part, EA doesn’t want to react to these rumors. Kotaku contacted the publisher, who gave a vague answer:
We have not commented on rumors and speculation about acquisitions and mergers. We are proud to operate from a position of strength and growth, with a catalog of excellent games, built around strong licenses, made by exceptionally talented teams and having a network of more than half a billion players. We see a bright future in the universe. – John Reseburg, spokesman for Electronic Arts.
