The Google Pixel 6a is expected to unveil at Google I/O on May 11-12. Design, screen, chip, photo … here’s everything we already know about it.
Traditionally, Google has released a mid-range version of its Pixels by adding the letter “a” to their number. For the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, it should come as no surprise that the Pixel 6a results. With a Pixel 6 already very cheap for the level of quality on offer (count 650 euros at the recommended price), there is reason to think about the concessions that Google can offer to make a much cheaper smartphone . We checked for leaks and rumors.
Same, but smaller
The previous Pixel range had one characteristic: these were phones that, although premium, retained a significant amount of complexity. With Pixel 6, it’s done! The smallest phone is 6.4 inches diagonal. Fortunately, according to the translations of 91Mobiles and OnLeaks and their related information, the Pixel 6a has a 6.2-inch Oled panel, probably in Full HD +. The fingerprint reader should be at the bottom of the screen and it can take advantage of the failures of the Pixel 6 and display a decent speed from the start.
The refresh still raises questions: will Google make the same option as the Pixel 5 and 5a by offering 60 Hz in its mid-range? We don’t know yet.
In design terms, it could be very close to the Pixel 6, almost taking its lines and the photo block almost line by line. Keep in mind, though, that the beak seems a little more prominent than the Pixel 6.
There is a glass on the back and its dimensions should look like this: 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.7 mm (10.4 mm at the level of the photo block). The lack of a jack as well as a table.
The same sensor as the Pixel 5
According to 9to5Google, the Pixel 6a will replace the Samsung GN1 with the Pixel 6 for the sensor used by previous Pixels from 3 to 5a: the Sony IMX363. Given the results of this 12.2 megapixel sensor in previous series, there’s nothing too much to worry about. The ultra wide-angle should be equipped with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 and the selfie feature should be provided with an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 sensor. A flash will also be placed on the photo block.
Also note that some secondary parts of the photo need to be dropped here. One thinks specifically of “Motion mode”, as in advance Android Police.
Not Soc agreement, but Tensor advantage
With the chip chosen by Google, it would be surprising if the Pixel 6a didn’t offer a Google Tensor, even in the lighter version, as it marks a real change in the Mountain View company’s strategy to stand out. We can even dream that Google is adopting the same strategy as Apple, equipping its iPhone SE with the same chip as the iPhone 13, and combining the Tensor GS101, the same chip as the other two models.
If Google really made this choice, we should take advantage of the many exclusive features of the Pixel 6 in this 6a, such as the magic eraser or instant translation.
In terms of RAM, if no information has been leaked so far, it seems reasonable to expect 6 to 8 GB of RAM. On the battery side, we should probably expect a shorter charge than the Pixel 6, which features 4614 mAh.
An old drop of 91Mobiles however, it raises a much more classic SoC, such as a Snapdragon 778G, but a consensus seems to be carrying a Tensor in a few months.
The phone could get three years of major updates like its predecessors and five years of security patches and should be offered on Android 12 out of the box.
Pixel 6a price and announcement date
The Pixel 6a is due to be presented at the Mountain View company’s annual conference, Google I / O, scheduled between May 11 and 12, 2022.
As a reminder, the launch of the Pixel 5a is limited to the United States and Japan. However, the Pixel 6a should follow in the footsteps of the Pixel 6 more and therefore benefit from a much more global launch.
On the price side, there is no drop that allows us to safely attack a price list. On the other hand, we can count on the prices of the previous Pixel Xa: 449 dollars for the Pixel 5a, but also 349 euros for the Pixel 4a. If the phone keeps Google Tensor, a price of almost 500 euros so it seems possible, but there is no certainty.
A drop from the phone box suggests there are three colors available: black, white and green. Only one version will be offered with 128 GB of storage.
